Beaconsfield: A Musical in A-Flat Minor
-
An Australian playwright has found himself in big, big trouble after writing a musical about one of Tasmania’s most talked about mining disasters. The 2006 Beaconsfield Mine disaster kept the nation glued to their telly’s for two weeks as rescue teams tried desperately to save trapped miners Brant Webb and Todd Russell from their small hovel, miles underground. As the two mates drank urine and sang songs, families above ground were mourning the loss of Larry Knight who perished during the mine collapse. But playwright Dan Ilic found humor in the incident. Can you see the hole he is digging for himself? Hmm, it seems he thought naming the play Beaconsfield: A Musical in A-Flat Minor, would be hilarious considering one miner died in the incident. But before you nervously snicker, the playwright Dan Ilic responded by saying “I had no idea they’d be so offended by it” (really?). The title was later changed to Beaconsfield: The Musical, which ain’t that friggin better! Oh and if you think the title makes you cringe, a song included in the play entitled Carleton Cardiac, is dedicated to journalist Richard Carleton who died of a fatal heart attack at the mine scene. Gee, I just don’t know whether to say “break a leg” at the opening or let the audience do it for me?

Hang on Charlie … I didn’t mention the play was about the miners, just the title. So before you throw stones re-read the post. Oh and for your info the playwright said he named the play deliberately to get media attention! So I think you should be aiming your jibes at him….
